EMPOWERING 350 GIRLS IN GHANA: TACKLING PERIOD POVERTY, PROMOTING LEADERSHIP AND EDUCATION

Anijie Foundation, in partnership with the Ghana National Association of Teachers – GNAT in the Brong Ahafo region of Ghana, is embarking on another menstrual hygiene project under Anijie Global Foundation’s EmpowerHer project. One major obstacle many girls face is period poverty – lacking access to adequate menstrual hygiene products and education. This has caused many girls to miss school during their periods each month, setting them back academically and limiting their future prospects.

Anijie Global Foundation, as an organization, seeks to help change that by providing an engaging educational session on menstrual hygiene and how to overcome period poverty and stigma. We will also be donating reusable sanitary pads to each of the girls to help ensure they can manage their periods safely, comfortably, and with dignity while staying in school.

We will be educating 300 girls and 50 boys, as boys are needed in this conversation, from various schools together at Akrodie St. Joseph Catholic Church, Brong-Ahafo region, Ghana on 28th May 2024 at 9 am.

The EmpowerHer project seeks to address the stigma and taboo surrounding menstruation in alleviating period poverty. We aim to address a world where everyone can access the products, education, and infrastructure they need.

We will provide sanitary pads, reusable menstrual products, provide menstrual health education, and leadership and confidence-building sessions, and SDG advocacy.

By having accurate information and proper supplies, girls can take charge of their reproductive health from an early age. This knowledge, we believe, is power – it allows them to make informed decisions, stay confident, and continue pursuing their education and goals without interruption.

We are also engaging 5 schools in the community, and involve stakeholders and community leaders such as queen mothers, teachers, and assembly members.

From all over the world, we stand, we work, we fight together for a #PeriodFriendlyWorld.

This initiative is set to empower her and create a world of period without barriers in reducing period poverty for 350 young people to foster education, leadership, women’s empowerment, and address gender equality.
